X-Ray

An X-ray examination uses ionising radiation to form an image of a selected area of the body.

X-ray equipment used for medical radiography.

About this examination

How an X-ray image is formed

Body tissues affect how much X-ray radiation reaches the detector. The resulting image helps a clinician assess the area named in the request.

The requested examination guides the visit

The body area and views are chosen for the clinical question. Any preparation depends on the particular X-ray examination, so follow the instructions provided for your appointment.

Before you visit

If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, tell the clinician or imaging team before the examination. Contact the centre to confirm availability, referral requirements and instructions for the specific X-ray requested.

Further information

See the NHS guide to X-rays. This page is a general summary, not personal medical advice. Follow your clinician’s advice.

Common questions

Questions about X-Ray.

General answers based on patient guidance. Your clinician or imaging team can confirm what applies to your examination.

X-Ray

What happens during an X-ray?

The radiographer positions the machine for the body area being examined and may ask you to hold still for a few seconds. You do not feel the X-rays being taken.

Do I need to prepare for an X-ray?

Many standard X-rays need little preparation, but instructions vary by examination. You may be asked to remove metal items or follow other directions, so check your appointment instructions.

What if I am pregnant or might be pregnant?

Tell the clinician or radiographer before the X-ray. They can consider the requested body area and your circumstances with the referring clinician before proceeding.
